Talia gets a fresh start in a new school

It was 17 degrees outside the day Dorothy* and her three children—Eva, 6; Talia, 7; and Aiden, 9—arrived at the Haven of Hope shelter in Red Wing, and they had no winter clothes.

Dorothy and her kids were fleeing her abusive husband and had hoped to stay with her sister until they could find a place to live. When her sister told them she had no room, they turned to Haven of Hope, a domestic violence shelter run by HOPE Coalition. Thanks to Open Your Heart’s Education Fund, the children were able to attend their first day of school with new winter clothing and backpacks filled with the necessary supplies to make their transition into a new community easier.

Open Your Heart helps thousands of kids like Talia, Eva and Aiden get the resources they need to stay engaged in school while their families are homeless. To learn more, visit our Education Grants page.
