Open Your Heart Awards Grants to Help Homeless Schoolchildren

July 12, 2010

Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless is proud to announce we have awarded $127,665 in education grants for the 2010-2011 school year. This marks our 15th year of dedicating at least 15 percent of our available funds to support the education-related needs of children and youth who are homeless. In addition, we were able to increase our education funding by 15 percent over last year thanks to the generosity of partners like the ADC Foundation, the Cub Cares Community Foundation and numerous individual donors who made designated gifts to the Education Fund.

Since 1996, the Open Your Heart Education Fund has given out nearly $1.5 million to help more than 48,000 students get the essentials they need to succeed in school. The funds are distributed to agencies working with homeless and highly mobile students and are used to purchase items such as backpacks, school supplies, tutoring materials, activity fees, gym shoes and winter clothing. Items such as these allow students who are homeless to more fully engage in school and access the same educational opportunities as their peers.
