Want to help
Open Your Heart by just doing your grocery shopping?

May 2008 -
Attention Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless
supporters! Here is an easy and painless way to
contribute to our organization by doing something you
already have to do – grocery shop! The 8
Kowalski's Markets throughout the Twin Cities area
have a wonderful program called “Groceries for Good
Causes.” The concept is simple - each Kowalski's
store has an area near their exits for this program and
all you have to do as a shopper is put your receipt in
the Open Your Heart container as you leave. Each
quarter, the individual stores count how many receipts
are in the bin and then send us a check based on this
number. The amount Kowalski’s donates is NOT
determined by how much is spent but rather on the number
of receipts received.
Through the end of June 2008, Open Your Heart is "on the
board" at the
Grand Ave. Market (1261 Grand Avenue, St. Paul),
the
Parkview Market (5616 Chicago Avenue South,
Minneapolis), the
White Bear Lake Market (4391 South Lake Avenue,
White Bear Lake) and the
Eden Prairie Market (16500 West 78th Street,
Eden Prairie). So, as you do your grocery
shopping, go to one of these Kowalski Markets and put
your receipt in our bin as you leave. Shop often
at these Kowalski's Markets and Open Your Heart to the
Hungry and Homeless will reap the benefits from this
wonderful community program!
Thank you so much to Kowalski’s for their wonderful
program!
Spring into Giving: Open Your Heart to the Hungry and
Homeless and the University of St. Thomas collaborate on
a spring giving drive
May 2008
-
The University of St.
Thomas collaborated
with Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless on a
"Spring into Giving" drive at the UST campus on Sunday,
May 4. This first ever event sought to collect
various items that would be given to local food shelves
and homeless shelters. We collected 6 boxes of
non-perishable food items and one box of school
supplies. All of the items were divided up and donated
to the Dorothy Day Center,
Emma Norton Services and the Ethel Gordon Community
Center. They were all very
appreciative of the donations that they received. Thank
you so much to the students at the University of St.
Thomas for
their kind donations! And a special thanks to Freshman
Class President Kevin Walker for all of his hard work
organizing this event!

An employee of the State of Minnesota Department of
Human Services, Demos provides technical support to Open
Your Heart and is participating in the re-design of the
Open Your Heart website. When asked why he
volunteers at Open Your Heart to the Hungry and
Homeless, Demos says, "Open
Your Heart is an organization that gives volunteers and
donors a chance to make a difference in the lives of
others. What we do, either by direct giving or
volunteering, enables hungry and homeless people who are
less fortunate to be helped."
Demos goes on to say, "As
a recently naturalized citizen, volunteering for Open
Your Heart provides an avenue for me to give back to a
country and community that has done so much for me and
for this I am very thankful!"

Board member

Open
Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless is proud to
announce the election of Audrey Anderson to the OYH
Board of Directors. Audrey is a senior at
Hill-Murray School, and her election is an outgrowth of
her participation in service programs at Hill-Murray
focused on ending homelessness. You can learn more
about Audrey

In an
effort to involve young people in the issues of hunger
and homelessness, the Board of Directors of Open Your
Heart to the Hungry and Homeless decided that the board
would include two designated positions on the board for
high school students. This enables the student to learn
more about how a non-profit organization works, learn
more about the issues of hunger and homelessness, and
encourages volunteerism and community involvement at a
young age.
The 2007 fundraiser for Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless
will be held on Thursday, October 25 from 5-8 PM at Christo's Union Depot Place in downtown St. Paul.
Please join us and FOX 9 meteorologist Christine
Clayburg as we celebrate past accomplishments and
hope for the future!

Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless welcomes new
Board members
September 2007 -
Open
Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless is proud to
introduce the election of new board members who bring a
broad range of experiences and a lot of passion about
the mission of Open Your Heart to alleviate hunger and
homelessness and to educate others about the issues.
Neeti Kambale, Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions
“I decided to join because of Open Your Heart to the
Hungry and Homeless’ mission. I used to volunteer a lot
in high school and I wasn't able to as much during
college, but now that I have graduated, I have more time
to volunteer and this organization seemed like a good
fit."
Norma Renville, Women of Nations
“I joined the OYH Board of Directors because I am
passionate about serving homeless women and children,
who for reasons beyond their control, find themselves in
need of shelter. I hope to bring my expertise to OYH,
but more importantly I wish to bring a fierce resolve to
carry out the mission of OYH."
Danielle Tessmer
“I joined the board because I did a lot of volunteer
work as a student in high school, through church and
sports groups, but then once I came to college I kind of
lost sight of that. So once I heard about OYH, I thought
it was a great opportunity to get re-involved in
volunteering. I hope to bring fresh ideas to the board,
as well as provide a unique, positive energy.”
Kelly
Sowards Opot, Headwaters Group Philanthropic Services
”My
interest in serving on the Open Your Heart Board is a
combination of a commitment to social justice and a
desire to be a tool for change in my community. The
dedication to citizenship and civic engagement are part
of what attracted me to the Twin Cities from Texas.”
Noriko
Gamblin, University of Minnesota Foundation
"I
have long wanted to direct my energies toward a cause
that would make a measurable difference in the lives of
those who are burdened by the lack of essential things,
such as food and shelter. I feel privileged to be a
part of Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless—a
unique organization with a dynamic and dedicated team
committed to making that difference right here in
Minnesota.“
Jodi Schoh,
Culligan Soft Water Service Company
"I
believe strongly in the importance of giving back to the
community and that one person does make a difference.
By serving on the board I hope to volunteer my time,
skills and ideas to make a difference in the hungry and
homeless issues in Minnesota.“
Open Your Heart to the Hungry
and Homeless provides $94,547 for needs of homeless
students
September 2007 -
For homeless and hungry families in Minnesota, it's a
time to look forward to receiving at least one
reduced-price or free school meal daily, as well as to
donations of much-needed clothing, shoes and school
supplies.
Open
Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless has recently
distributed
$94,547 to 47 agencies statewide to provide
school-related needs to students who are homeless.
From
1996-2007, Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless
has distributed over $1 million in funding to 510
organizations, reaching more than 34,000 students.
Grants are provided to Minnesota school districts,
shelter providers and other agencies supporting families
who are or have been homeless. Ninety percent of
homeless children who are still with their parents
attend school, according to the Wilder Foundation.
If you

here. New Officers Express High Hopes for Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless
May 18, 2007 -- The board of Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless recently elected a new leadership team responsible for its recently completed strategic plan.
Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless is the only 501(c)(3) charitable fund in Minnesota focused solely on hunger and homelessness. Open Your Heart makes grants to food, shelter and transitional housing agencies throughout the state. It also provides grants to support children and youth living in shelters with educational needs such as supplies, fees, graduation costs, and other essentials that help students stay in school.
Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless has been helping alleviate the effects of hunger and homelessness in Minnesota for more than twenty years. Donations to Open Your Heart come from workplace giving campaigns as well as individual donations that are distributed through competitive grants to agencies throughout Minnesota.
Elected president was Yoji Shimizu, a University of Minnesota professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and Immunology program leader at the U of M’s Cancer Center.
“I hope that OYH can enhance its ability to alleviate hunger and homelessness in Minnesota by improving the effectiveness of our fundraising efforts and increasing our visibility. We would like to address not only the immediate needs, but also work to highlight and address systemic solutions. OYH is well positioned to meet these challenges due to the strong leadership of former president, Mike Fratto, and other long-time members of the OYH Board of Directors,” said Shimizu.
Tonya Brownlow, Housing Program Director at Our Saviour’s Housing in Minneapolis, was tapped to be the vice president. “With greater visibility, I think Open Your Heart can have a greater impact on hunger and homelessness in Minnesota,” said Brownlow.
Newly-elected secretary, Paul Jarvis, a Financial Consultant with the Wealth Management Team at Associated Bank, said, “I want people to know what an outstanding organization Open Your Heart is. We’ve been working below the radar for many years. We want to break new ground in raising money, but also awareness of issues related to hunger and homelessness,” said Jarvis.
Roger Henry, an executive with Plexus Group, was reelected Treasurer.
