Open Your Heart Announces $100,000 Food Shelf Challenge

Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless brings you a new approach to Hunger Awareness Month (September) with our new $100,000 food shelf challenge grant.

The recession has impacted more than half of the nation’s working adults, pushing them into unemployment, pay cuts, reduced hours.

More than 13.8 percent of households in Minnesota reported in 2009 not having enough money to
buy food that they needed during the prior twelve months for themselves or their family.

The emergency food safety net in Minnesota has responded to increased visits to food shelves, but we need your help to continue to meet the need.

The Challenge

Open Your Heart has created a new $100,000 challenge grant that will match monetary donations to participating Minnesota food shelves during the month of September. Grant funds will enable food shelves to obtain more food for people in need and raise awareness of hunger within our state. The match for each food shelf will be proportional to the amount donated by community members, so the more you give in September, the larger your food shelf’s grant will be!
