Hunger and Homeless Grants

These grants are targeted toward hunger relief programs or temporary shelter/housing for homeless people or people experiencing domestic violence.

NOTE: There have been some changes in the funding priorities and application process for this grant starting January 1, 2017. Please read all of the following grant guidelines. We are also switching to an online application process which will be available by January 1, 2017, at the latest.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Agencies that serve hungry and/or homeless people as their primary function in Minnesota.
2017 DUE DATES: March 1st, May 1st, July 1st, September 1st, and November 1st. Agencies will be notified of grant decisions approximately two months after the due date.
AVERAGE GRANT SIZE: $7,000.

Education Grants

These grants support the educational needs of children and youth experiencing homelessness.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Only Minnesota homeless shelters, transitional housing programs, supportive housing agencies, and school districts with an active Title I Homeless Youth Program are eligible to apply for funding. Agencies with multiple service sites should submit only one application for all sites.

Special Projects

Open Your Heart will occasionally implement Requests for Proposals for unique or timely issues affecting hungry and homeless people. These opportunities will be announced on our website at least two months prior to the deadline. Please sign up here and check that you would like “New Grant Announcements” to receive these announcements by email.

Sponsorship of Community Events is only for pre-selected charities. 

Emergencies

We recognize that on occasion, a natural disaster or other unforeseen event might result in a shutdown of services. We may be able to fund quickly in those circumstances. Please call our office at (612) 338-5577 if that situation arises. Please note, emergency grants will only be available to agencies that have no other resources available and will require suspending services without immediate assistance.
