Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless works to help hungry and homeless Minnesotans through granting funds to food and housing agencies.
General Grant Funding
NOTICE: Starting in April 2010, general grant applications must be emailed and postmarked by the 20th of the month to be considered for approval the following month.
Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless processes general grant requests monthly in order to respond to community needs as quickly as possible. To apply for an Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless grant, eligible non-profit organizations must be 501(c ) (3) non-profit agencies as determined by the Internal Revenue Service, and be in compliance with all relevant provisions of Minnesota Statutes Chapter 309. In addition, organizations must provide one of the following services to hungry or homeless people in Minnesota:
- emergency food assistance
- on-site meal services
- emergency overnight shelter for homeless persons (including battered women and youth)
- transitional or permanent supportive housing (for persons who have been homeless or who are at risk of being homeless and whose individual or family income does not exceed 30 percent of the area adjusted median income as determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development)
Education Grant Funding
Application deadline for 2010-2011 school year: April 15, 2010
Since 1996, Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless has designated a portion of our grant funds to support the educational needs of children and youth experiencing homelessness. These funds are reserved for Minnesota homeless shelters, transitional housing programs, and supportive housing agencies serving homeless children and youth in grades K-12 for purposes that will assist the students in their educational pursuits. Education grants are awarded once for each academic year.
