In March of 2005, the Open Your Heart Board of Directors approved a $10,000 grant request from the Ain Dah Yung Center in St. Paul. This grant will enable them to make much needed repairs to their furnace and garage.

The Ain Dah Yung Center, which means "our home" in the Ojibwe language, began in 1983 as an emergency shelter for runaway and homeless American Indian youth. The shelter quickly filled the need for a culturally relevant and safe place in the Twin Cities - one of the most concentrated urban American Indian populations in the United States.

Each year Open Your Heart funds food banks, on-site feeding programs, and local food shelves across Minnesota. In 2004, our Board of Directors approved a $10,000 grant to Channel One, Inc. for an electronic forklift scale, wire mesh decks for warehouse racks, and installation.

Channel One Food Bank, a member of America's Second Harvest, the Nation's Food Bank Network, received over 5.5 million pounds of product during the year (an increase over last year of 48%). The Food Bank distributed 4,923,574 pounds of product (a 21% increase over last year) to 187 member agency programs in SE Minnesota and La Crosse County, Wisconsin that serve the needy.

Andy Schneider from Apple Valley chose to help Lewis House in Eagan for his Eagle Scout Gold Project. Lewis House was named after the late State Senator B. Robert Lewis who dedicated his life to community service. In 2004, we provided shelter to 640 women and children.

Providing all materials, Andy built needed custom library shelves for two walls. Andy was joined by his father and grandfather who donated their carpentry skills.

    Hunger Day

In June, as a part of National Hunger Day, events will be happening all over the nation to raise awareness about the problems of poverty and hunger in this country.

One local program, sponsored by Community Emergency Assistance Program, Hope for the City, and Northwest Hennepin Human Services Council, is the Getting at the Roots of Hunger-2005 program.

These agencies will be giving out free seed to community garden projects within the seven county Twin Cities metropolitan area. Seed is available to businesses, volunteers and congregations who are willing to plant it and share with those in need.
