Greetings!
As Thanksgiving approaches, we give thanks to all of
our donors who make it possible for us to carry out our mission of
helping hungry and homeless Minnesotans!
Fall is the time of year when we have the opportunity
to connect with individuals in more than 40 workplace giving
campaigns. Charitable giving in the workplace provides the majority
of our funding, and the increased generosity we've seen from employees
in the past few years enables us to continue meeting the growing
needs in our community. We deeply appreciate the hard work that
employee giving campaign leaders do to make giving in the workplace
fun and easy. I'm always impressed by the creativity and passion they
show in organizing fun events such as office Olympics, potluck
lunches, and silent auctions to benefit Open Your Heart and other
charities.
In November we're looking forward to more workplace giving campaigns
as well as the return of Give to the Max Day on November 16. When we
told you about this event last year, we never could have imagined the
amazing outcome it would have--more than 38,000 people gave over $14
million to Minnesota nonprofits including Open Your Heart. We're thankful
to all those who gave to Open Your Heart last year and are looking
forward to an even more successful event in 2010 with a generous
match from our Board of Directors. Read the article on Give to the
Max Day below to find out more!
In this season of thanks we are grateful for all of you who have
shared in our mission to make sure every Minnesotan is free from
hunger and homelessness. We wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving with
your family!

Last year Minnesotans shattered a national online
giving record on the first-ever Give to the Max Day, donating over
$14 million to more than 3,400 nonprofits in 24 hours. Open Your
Heart was honored to have been a part of this historic event and
grateful to all those who supported us on that day.
Give to the Max Day returns on Tuesday, November 16,
and we're looking forward to an even more successful year in 2010.
Open Your Heart's Board of Directors has generously pledged to match
all contributions on Give to the Max Day, dollar-for-dollar, up to
$3,600. Our board members have come together in an amazing show of
support to create this matching fund in order to help the growing
number of people in need. Please give to Open
Your Heart on November 16 to take advantage of this opportunity
to double your impact.
By
participating in Give to the Max Day, you also have a chance to have
$1,000 added to your donation by winning the "Golden
Ticket." This special prize is being awarded by one of GiveMN's
sponsors to one randomly selected donor each hour during the 24 hours
of the event.
You can also
support Open Your Heart by helping us increase our visibility before
the event. Visit our GiveMN
profile to become a fan of Open Your Heart and to share our page
with your family and friends. This is a great way to show your
support and could help Open Your Heart get listed on GiveMN's
homepage, boosting our visibility at this critical moment.
Please
consider supporting Open Your Heart on Give to the Max Day. GiveMN is
secure and easy to use, and you can double your gift to make an even
bigger impact in the lives of people like you--children, seniors,
veterans and working adults--who need food and shelter today.

Open Your Heart
Engages in Strategic
Planning
Open Your Heart is
undergoing strategic planning to determine how we can most
meaningfully impact hunger and homelessness in Minnesota in the next
few years. In September we hosted a community forum to gather input
from a variety of stakeholders--grant recipients, hunger and
homelessness coalitions, workplace giving campaign leaders,
volunteers and board members. We are honored and humbled that more
than 60 people came to share their expertise and ideas. We saw a high
level of energy and collaboration from everyone involved, and we hope
to keep this momentum going as we move ahead in our strategic
planning.
Our
next step is to take all that we have learned about current trends,
needs and innovations in our sector and to develop a strategic
direction for Open Your Heart. The Board of Directors began
evaluating possibilities at its retreat on October 30 and will
continue to shape this plan over the next few months. As always, we
strive to be responsive to the needs in our community and deeply
value the input we receive from others invested in our mission.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time to share your ideas.
We would love to hear from you.
Thanks
to Anne Sturdivant of the Latitudes Group
for her thoughtful and skillful facilitation and to the Otto Bremer
Foundation and the Saint Paul
Foundation for their generous financial support of our strategic
planning initiative.
