Board of Directors

Our all-volunteer Board of Directors meets monthly to ensure the organization is operating smoothly. We are grateful for the expertise they share with open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless.

In addition to the following board members, appreciation goes to Ed Retka, Board Member Emeritus, and Michael Fratto, Board Member Emeritus, for their years of service with Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless.

Yoji Shimizu, Board President

As a University of Minnesota employee, Yoji became aware of Open Your Heart through the University’s yearly workplace giving campaign. He began serving on the Board of Directors in 2002 and is honored to currently be serving as Board President. In his spare time, Yoji plays in a band, the Outliers, that performs at benefits for other charities in the Twin Cities.

Shannah Moore Mulvihill, Vice President

Shannah Moore Mulvihill has served on the board since 2003 and was elected secretary in 2007. She served as fall event chairperson in 2006 and 2007 and now serves as the Board Vice President. Shannah works as the communications director at the Minnesota State University Student Association and recently received her master’s degree in counseling psychology. She lives in Howard Lake with her husband.

Jodi L. Schoh, Treasurer

Jodi Schoh works as the Accounting Manager for Culligan Soft Water Service Company providing quality water to consumers and businesses. Jodi earned her undergraduate degree from Winona State University and received her MBA at the University of Minnesota. Jodi enjoys volunteering and finds serving on the Board of Directors for Open Your Hear a rewarding way to make a difference in helping hungry and homelessness people.

Maureen A. Flanagan, Secretary

Maureen Flanagan served nine years as Deputy Superintendent in the St. Paul Public Schools in St. Paul, Minnesota. Prior to holding that position she was a teacher, district curriculum chairperson, director of special projects and gifted education K-12, desegregation/Magnet planner, fund development director and assistant superintendent. Maureen has a BS in education, MS in gifted education K-12, and an EDS in leadership and administration.

She founded Minnesots Educators of Gifted and Talented (MEGT), a chapter based state association for teachers and administrators working with gifted students. She was selected to be a fellow in the Bush Foundation Leadership Program (Midwest), the Institute for Education Leadership (Washington, D.C.) and the Education Policy Fellows Program (U of M). Her last co-authored book, Aimless Drift or Quiet Redesign: An Examination of Public Education Governance in Minnesota is used as a graduate course text at the U of M. Extensive background and experience in federal relations/legislations, policy analysis and development, and strategic planning led to the 2002 establishment of The Flanagan Group, an education consulting firm specializing in those areas.

Andrew Klein, member

Andrew Klein has been a member since 2007. He has been active in Amnesty International at his school and has completed many service projects through Boy Scouts. As an Eagle Scout, he is committed to help neighbors to have some of the great opportunities he had. Klein says, “How can anyone truly become who they were meant to be if they must constantly worry about food and shelter? In the land of equal opportunity, it is imperative that we help provide the necessities of life, so people can have that opportunity to be what they were meant to be.”

Cary Cunningham, member

Cary Cunningham became aware of Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless in 2009 while seeking volunteer opportunities through MAP for Nonprofits. Growing up on the East Side of St. Paul, Cary has witnessed firsthand the problems of hunger and homelessness and is thankful that his role with Open Your Heart allows him to contribute toward the solution for these issues.

Cary graduated in 2002 with a degree in International Business from the University of St. Thomas and currently works at Lifeworks Services, serving people with disabilities. Both personally and professionally, Cary strives to help those who are less fortunate than himself.

Christina Giese, member

Christina first learned of Open Your Heart in 2002 when Simpson Housing Services received a grant allowing formerly homeless children to receive school pictures and uniforms. She joined the board to further her work for people experiencing homelessness. She passionately believes that every person has a right to safe and affordable housing.

Cynthia Schaffer, member

Cynthia, Executive Director of Channel One Food Bank serving the Rochester, Minnesota area, has over 21 years experience in human service related non-profits. She has served on and been a founding member of several boards and active with community groups including United Way, advocacy organizations and hunger groups. She attended school in Virginia and North Carolina and now calls Minnesota home.

Daniel DuHamel, member

Daniel DuHamel came to know Open Your Heart through the grants Open Your Heart provided to his previous employer, Simpson Housing Services. Now working for the Minnesota Department of Human Services Office of Economic Opportunity, he feels that his service on the Board of Open Your Heart broadens his ability to help organizations throughout Minnesota serve those most in need. Daniel holds a Master of Public Policy in Nonprofit Leadership from the Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota and a Master of Education from the University of Minnesota.

Doug Golden, member

Doug Golden is vice president of Strategic Partners for Compellent Technologies in Eden Prairie, MN. In a career that spans over 20 years, he has held executive leadership positions with Compellent, IBM, Network Associates and GE Capital IT Solutions. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse.

Mr. Golden is personally dedicated to improving communities and is committed to solving hunger and homelessness in his home state. He is also active with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities.

Hugh Juergens, member

After thirty years in Information Technology as a Professor, Manager and Architect, Hugh is now focusing attention on helping others through volunteer experiences. By serving on the Open Your Heart board he is able to use his professional skills by developing databases and applications for them. Hugh holds a PhD from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Business.

Jeff Zibley, member

After twenty-six years as Vice President at Malt-O-Meal Company, Jeff elected to retire early to pursue his desire to become involved in the non profit sector. Working with Open Your Heart gives him the opportunity to be involved in an organization that does significant work in the community- supporting hungry and homeless people with their most basic needs. Jeff earned his BA and MA from the University of Minnesota. Jeff resides in Lakeville with his family.

Julie Burkhardt, member

Julie was first introduced to Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless through a workplace giving campaign and has since sought to expand her role in making a difference. She is energized to be part of a group working hard to help people most in need across the state. Julie’s background is in information technology management. She earned her undergraduate degree from Winona State University and her MBA from the University of St. Thomas.

Mark Kaszinski, member

Mark is currently employed by the Minnesota Department of Commerce and works with the low-income energy programs. He has been a state employee for 30 years with experience working with the MN Community Action Agency network as well as with state and federal emergency shelter programs, transitional housing programs and the emergency food assistance programs.

Matt Pellowski, member

Matt is a graduate of Winona State University where he majored in Business Administration. He is employed at Capella University where he manages a technical support team. Matt is an active alumni member of Delta Sigma Pi (an international business fraternity), and a member of Toastmasters International.

Paul Gifford, member

Paul serves as Director of Corporate Relations with Hope for the City. He brings experience of over 35 years in the grocery industry as owner and manager and additionally works directly with the food shelves throughout Minnesota for many years assisting them in their efforts to feed families in need. Paul’s other board experience includes serving on his townhome complex and church council; in both instances as President and member.

Paul’s favorite saying: “We all do better…when we all do better.”

Robert Iaria, member

Robert Iaria is a 10-year employee at CH Robinson Worldwide, Inc. (CHRW) in Eden Prairie, MN. He specializes in Reverse Logistics. Robert holds a BA degree in Business Management from UW-Eau Claire and an MBA from Augsburg College. Robert became aware of Open Your Heart through CHRW’s yearly workplace giving campaign and was encouraged to be able to serve on a board where he can impact the organization for such an important cause.

Roger Henry, member

Roger Henry has served on the board of directors of Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless since 1991. After working for 33 years in the finance industry Roger can now focus his passion full time to working on the issues of hunger, homelessness and his golf swing. Roger serves on the St. Andrew’s Foundation board. As a lifelong fixer upper, he has worked on many Habitat for Humanity houses both in the metro area and in Jamaica.

Susan Conley Fenton, member

Susan manages the Group Customer Service Department at Minnesota Life, an affiliate of Securian Financial Group. She has been with the company for fourteen years.

Susan has a strong desire to serve the community and make a positive impact on the lives of others. This is what brought her to Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless. She is excited to be a part of an organization that helps address the most basic of needs- food and shelter, in an effort to improve the overall quality of life for Minnesotans who are most in need.
